An intimate Michelin Guide restaurant based in the heart of Masham - the gateway to The Yorkshire Dales. Listed after just 6 months of opening and having garnered many great write ups subsequently including a rare 5/5 in the Yorkshire Post.

The menu is written weekly, a fixed 7 course set menu (+ optional extras) that constantly evolves based on the best available produce. Sourced from a network of local artisan growers and farmers the aim is to put the best of the UK to your plate with a big focus on the surrounds of North Yorkshire.

Chef Jon Atashroo trained at numerous Michelin starred restaurants in London before discovering the simply joy of cooking with fire about 10 years ago and hasn't looked back since. Focused on producing everything possible in house, it is all made in house including the tables and ceramics.

We are more than happy to accommodate any and all dietary requests as long as we have prior notice. Usually we offer the same weekly menu for group bookings but can also accommodate more "family style" sharing options upon request.
Private party facilities
Where there's Smoke has a comfortable "snug" private dining room that can comfortably seat up to 14 guests. We are also amenable to hiring the main restaurant out for private functions and events outside of our usual opening hours.

Booked a table for 6 to celebrate my husbands birthday. We’ve visited this restaurant before and have always been very impressed. We arrived to a lovely warm welcome. We had requested the downstairs dining area. The tables are made with a live edge and are simply stunning. Table settings are perfect and not overly fussy. Ambience was just right, some music but not overpowering. We were a mixed age group and everyone found the music enjoyable - this is a tough job as age span 40-80. We could easily chat without the music interfering. Service is friendly and relaxed, without being stuffy or too much. Again the perfect balance. We ordered wine and the list is varied with something for everyone. Now for the food, we were blown away. From the first bite to the last we were all very impressed. Firm favourites were the warm cheese puffs, the salami, the sourdough and soup. The beef was a perfect centrepiece and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Cooked perfectly too. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable experience, we would recommend Where There’s Smoke to others and will certainly be returning in the future. It’s by far the best place in Masham to dine. Huge thanks to all the lovely team that made our night so enjoyable.

Everything about this restaurant is carefully thought out, aesthetically pleasing and utterly delicious. John and John (front of house and chef) create a beautiful menu and ambience. Dishes are often cooked over an open flame so there is a gentle smoked flavour to some dishes which is magical. We are a set 7 course menu which was inventive, flavourful and deeply satisfying. The wine list is very comprehensive and with some nice choices. I love it here and will return as soon as possible.

I was lucky to be able to make a booking at this restaurant during our stay in Masham. We are both vegetarian so requested a veggie menu in advance. The food was superb, we can’t praise it highly enough. Too often in restaurants we get fobbed off with mediocre pasta, risotto or curry dishes, all of which we can produce cheaply and easily ourselves. It was wonderful to have dishes served to us that had been produced with incredible skill, imagination and attention to detail. We definitely don’t have the skill or know how to do this ourselves. For once we didn’t feel like we were an inconvenience or afterthought simply because we didn’t eat meat or fish. It’s so much harder to produce good, varied and tasty vegetarian food and the chef more than achieved this, demonstrating outstanding talent. We received a very friendly and warm welcome and the service was excellent throughout the evening. The ambiance of the restaurant was spot on, it wasn’t noisy so we didn’t struggle to hear each other talk and I love that there is space between the tables. Room to relax without feeling like you’re eavesdropping on each others’ conversations. My one regret is that we live over 200 miles away, although my credit card bill would rocket if we lived nearby! We will definitely visit again if we are back in the area.

We had a lovely meal out for a birthday celebration. The food was delicious, top quality produce cooked with attention to detail. Table service from John, really friendly explaining all courses very well and happy to answer all our questions. Would highly recommend a meal here!

First visit to Where there’s Smoke and didn’t disappoint. From the canapés to the dessert the standard of food and service was exceptional and we would hope to revisit in the near future
