Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Hector Marquez

From the OpenTable editors: For a quintessentially Texan cowboy meal, head to one of Fort Worth’s most iconic restaurants. Hearty Tex-Mex plates include chicken-fried steak with cracked-pepper cream gravy and tacos stuffed with caramelized bananas and chocolate “gravy.” A pitch-perfect wine list focused on small producers makes every meal here feel like a special occasion.

The dining room was crowded and lacked the atmosphere I had come to know in the other 2 locations. The cocktails were not very good. The service and food were as good as ever.

Nice atmosphere, excellent service. Wasn’t impressed with the dinner. It wasn’t bad. It certainly wasn’t $50-60/meal worthy. Tough steak, undercooked mixed vegetables. This just solidified my Dads lack of desire to venture out.

We arrived at the Reata 15 minutes earlier than booked/opening; however, reception committee was friendly, very welcoming, and invited us to the bar where we found Coco and staff were just as pleasant and attentive. Once seated, the atmosphere changed. Our server, Christian, was very nice; however, we noticed he was taking a bread basket to everyone seated after us, and around us, but not us. We had to request our bread basket from him, which he apologized for forgetting. Our 2 entrees requested were Chicken Fried Steak and Grilled Salmon with asparagus (instead of rice), and vegetables cooked well-done due to a jaw issue. Christian was very understanding of the TMJ situation. Both entrees were delicious; however, the portions were much smaller than we remembered, and although the asparagus was well-done, the green beans and carrots were much too hard to chew (barely blanched), and the chicken fried steak was served over mashed potatoes which made the crispy breading soggy, thus useless. For dessert we selected the Dessert Tacos with Caramelized Bananas and Chocolate Gravy. Christian informed us the taco shell was very thin and would be very easy to chew. On the contrary; the taco shell, even for one of us without a jaw issue, found the shell very thick and difficult to breakdown, and the caramelized bananas, call us tourists passing through, because we detected there were 1 and 1/2 thin slices of banana that were chopped up smaller than a ¼" x ¼" for $12.; therefore, a complete waste of money. When our bill arrived, Christian explained his manager took off 1 beer for the hardened vegetables, which prior, we had mentioned our feedback was not provided for any freebees. We were surprised the asparagus was a $2. up-charge; point being Christian should have mentioned that up front. Our conclusion, unfortunately, is that the Reata has turned into a tourist trap, especially compared to our meals at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle the previous evening.

Asada was too tough to eat. Enchiladas good. Red fish was dry with very little sauce. Cherry line was a great drink. Too bad the food was subpar.
