For thirty years Sel et Poivre has served classic French bistro fare at their location on the Upper East Side. Situated on Lexington Avenue between 64th and 65th Streets, they are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and feature a prix fixe brunch menu on the weekend.

The menus are elegant, yet not overdone. Appetizers include terrine de foie gras with red wine grapes, mussels marinière or à la provençale with French fries, and of course, an exceptional French onion soup that should not be missed. Dinner entrées include classic French items such as frog's legs in Pernod sauce and duck à l’orange with wild rice, plus items such as pan-seared chicken breast served with wild mushroom sauce and mixed vegetables, a bistro burger with French fries, and thin-sliced steak frites and salad. Of course if you're ready to indulge, they also feature a filet mignon in a red wine shallot sauce with roasted Yukon Gold potatoes and an aged New York sirloin steak with Roquefort or poivre sauce.

I brought my staff for lunch and was very disappointed. We order Steak, fries and salad for lunch. Steak was supposed to be a top round, london broil. It came out looking like a minute steak over salted and tough. Two of us had to send it back.

Always enjoy this traditional French restaurant. I appreciated that we were not rushed and able to relish time with my friend.

Last night was one of the best meals we've ever had at this longtime favorite restaurant! Green bean salad and tomato mozzarella ones were better than usual and the roast chicken was wonderful. Had a bit more au jus (even a little more would be even greater!) While they have daily specials, I do wish they'd change up their regular menu--perhaps a different salmon preparation, a new pasta dish, etc.

IN THE SPRING WE HAVE COLD POACHED SALMON ONE OF OUR REGULAR CUSTOMERS FAVORITE. IT IS DELIC; BUT OUR SALMON ON THE MENU IS ONE OF THE MANY MOST POPULAR DISHES. . YOU WILL BE GETTING A BIG CHANGE SOON. THANK YOU.

I love the relaxed feel of this place home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. We tried liver and kidney - really like in France.

We live about 350 miles from NYC and visit once or twice per year. We try to visit Sel et Poivre about every other year for the past 20 years. The food is great, but what brings us back over and over again is it seems nearly everyone else in the restaurant is a local from the neighborhood. That alone is the best recommendation for a restaurant, but it helps me feel like a local when I am in town. So glad this restaurant made it through COVID unscathed; we are all the more fortunate for it.

My wife and I have been to Sel et Poivre a number of times. Last night was a bit disappointing. There were a number of empty tables and yet we felt a bit rushed, with too little time between our appetizers and entrees. My pork chop was too dry as well. We'll come back, but maybe not as quickly as usual.

It was okay, if you’re in the neighborhood, it’s a decent meal. Service is very friendly and atmosphere is nice. Good if you’re nearby.
