My wife and I decided to try out Sony’s for the first time for her birthday last night. Food was great, portion size was adequate, and the atmosphere was festive (Christmas decor was lovely) and warm. The only negative was the server — it seemed as if he was rushing to the flip the table by the way he spoke and cleared the table. He also didn’t mention anything about it being her birthday even though I marked that down in the reservation. Not sure if that’s something he sees though so I don’t want to be too critical.

We frequent Soby’s. Food is consistently solid. However, this visit was not up to Soby’s standards for relaxed Southern hospitality. 1. Celebrating an anniversary, indicated on the reservation. Our table was upstairs ( ok…it’s usually quieter) but on the railing overlooking a portion of the kitchen. Felt like we were in an episode of “The Bear” 2. Immediately after being handed a menu and drink menu by a hostess who seated us and never spoke, the waiter asked if we knew what we wanted to order. 3. After saying we just sat and hadn’t had a chance to look at any menus, and will be ordering cocktails, he walked away. Typically Soby’s waitstaff engage with you, ask if you’ve been there before, are celebrating anything, etc. Nothing… 4. Waiter circles back and take one cocktail order (apple mule and a sweet tea) asking AGAIN if we know what we wanted to order. He hasn’t taken my spouse’s drink order. We asked if he could take the 2nd order and he said 2 drink were already ordered, he thought we were done ! 5. Feeling VERY rushed, we said we’d have the drinks ordered and look at the menu. When he returned with a tea and no cocktails yet, he asked again for our food order. Soup was ordered and arrived well before the bar order. 6. Drinks arrived, food was ordered and arrived quickly ( still trying to enjoy a cocktail and celebration…HA) Time from seating to completion of drinks and main course: 40 minutes ! We hear our waiter telling another table the featured specials of the day. There were specials??? When he took the dessert ordered, I asked him if there had been any specials tonight. His response was yes, but they’re gone now. Seriously? They may not have been gone when we were being rushed to order! Total time at Soby’s for our cocktails, appetizer/ soup, entrees, and dessert? 55 minutes. No, this was not what we were hoping for to celebrate our anniversary at a downtown, Southern hospitality restaurant.

Reservation was made days/approximately two weeks ahead of time-requested standard seating. Arrived 15-20 minutes before reservation…asked again upon arrival where we wanted to sit. Seemed no problem as there were many empty tables and booths in the standard dining room. Unfortunately, we were seated at a table in the loud bar-high top table area. Unacceptable given the above. Food was fine/average for a busy restaurant. Note: This one star review must NOT reflect on the superb performance of Cam/Cameron. He was excellent; his performance exceeded expectations.

Only our fourth time dining here with just a couple hiccups in the food. But overall a 5 star experience. Our server Rachel was excellent! The restaurant was festively and tastefully decorated for Christmas. Regarding food, the fried green tomatoes with a pimento cheese foam are amazing! The entree of scallops was superb. The crab cakes pretty decent although I’m not entirely sure they use Lump crabmeat, they are not a disappointment. The salmon entree was excellent although the cauliflower was ice cold and overcooked. The only off food was the She Crab Soup (beyond salty was the opinion of all three of us) and not edible after just one taste. The best thing about Soby’s is they have a real and serious wine list. That’s something I’ve not found at any other top Greenville restaurant.
